Newborn preparation guide for a studio photography shoot

One day before the session, please make sure you get everything ready for your session and you are familiar with the directions and location of the studio. My full contact information and link to Google maps directions will be listed at the bottom of this page.

The best newborn photography is achieved when a baby is in deep sleep. It allows me to easily dress, pose and position the baby on the props. So the aim for the session is to have a relaxed, sleepy and happy baby. Anything that can upset the bay should be avoided. For instance change of diet a few days before session. If baby is breast-fed, consuming caffeine (tea, coffee etc) can make them more alert and restless at the session.

A warm bath and interaction with the baby a couple hours prior the session, will have a positive effect on the baby being relaxed and sleepy.

The day before the session, it would be good to bath the baby with a soft brush to remove any flaky skin. Trim the baby’s nails and toenails.

If the baby is unsettled and crying before the session, I would like you to let me know so we can move the appointment for an hour or so and see if the baby settles. If not, we will have to re-arrange for another day. It absolutely normal and nothing to worry out.

Things to bring with you

Newborn session can take anything between 2-4 hours, so bring a book, or Ipad/laptop to help you to pass the time by. Have a good nutritious meal before you set off.

The studio will be very warm so you need to make sure you are dressed appropriately in layers.

Dress the baby in loose clothing like pyjamas to avoid any marks on the skin. Please do not use onesies as its difficult to undress the baby without waking them up.

Bring a dummy for the baby regardless if you are planning to use it or not. It will help to settle the baby during the shoot.

Bring plenty of nappies and wet wipes for changing the baby during the session.

Bring bottles of food for the baby (either formula or breast milk) and be prepared feed the baby several times during the session.

Bring a set of change clothing for you as accidents do happen.

Please do whatever you can to keep the noise to a minimum during our session. Maintaining a calm environment is also a big key to a successful newborn shoot. I will have a soothing music or white noise sound paying in the background. During the session I will handle the baby for dressing, posing, calming them down if needed.

I'm looking forward to see you at my studio to capture most amazing and precious images that can be treasured for many generations!
